It’s that time of year again! Every winter humpback whales, kohalā, migrate thousands of miles from their feeding grounds in the North Pacific to Hawai’i to breed and calve. Humpbacks can reach lengths of 45 feet and can weigh up to 50 tons! During peak season, when the most whales are present, it’s possible to see different types of whale behaviors from shore and even in the water while you surf or SUP. One of the most exciting behaviors to see is when the whales use their tales to launch themselves out of the water, breaching. Whether enjoying whale watching from a boat or a board it’s important to keep in mind that humpback whales are a federally protected species and regulations prohibit approaching within 100 yards.
This winter, while surfing or SUP’n with our Lahaina Surf Shack crew be sure to keep a look out our favorite winter visitors! To learn more check out marinesantuary.org
