Aina and Chyna are lifelong friends that have been in the surf school industry for many years. Complete water babies that just want to share the love of surfing with others. Over the years they have seen how the community they grew up in has begun to disappear. So through Lahaina Surf Shack they have decided to break the mold and focus on giving back, by bringing the community together and taking care of the water and land that gives so much to us through our community outreach programs.
Here at Lahaina Surf Shack we launched our first community surf day in April 2018 with our goal being one per month. At these events we offer free lessons and rentals to community members while educating visitors on who we are and what our focus is. Our instructors volunteer their time and donations are welcomed to aid in the continued growth and development of these events. Our goal is to introduce surfing to those who haven’t been exposed to it for one reason or another, share our love for surfing and the ocean with them while educating them on protecting our coral reef system, ocean and beaches. We aim to do this through beach clean ups, promoting reef safe sunscreens and supporting the movement to eliminate single use plastic. We are excited to make a difference as a community!
As mothers they have a passion for creating opportunities for children so this lead us to adding more programs. A portion of our proceeds will go towards helping fund these programs so that we can continue and grow them, keep them affordable and offer scholarships.
What better way to spend a week off school than in the ocean catching waves! We want kids to be outdoors, active, appreciating the ocean and learning the art of surfing. Our camps are open to 1st graders-6th graders.
Our camps took off so we decided why not continue to develop these kids and create an after school program that will allow them to surf every week and keep progressing their skills. As adults we love to surf after a work day or even before so why not create this opportunity for our kids. The ultimate goal is to get these kids to the point that they can take a board out themselves, because they want to and because they have the ability to do so. Our ASP is open to 1st-6th graders.
Once a month we will post up at a local beach with boards and instructors and give anyone that is a resident a free lesson or board to go surf! Not everyone has access to boards or surfing so we want to be able to provide that for kids and adults, all levels. We will also educate visitors about our surfing community, our ocean and the need to take care of it.
